Low-level laser: a conversation about foot pain
Low-level laser therapy, also called photobiomodulation, is different from laser used to destroy a skin lesion. It may be considered as an addition to a rehabilitation plan for selected conditions.
A 2023 plantar-fasciitis guideline supports low-level laser for short-term pain reduction as part of rehabilitation. That does not establish the same benefit for every pain condition or every laser device. Assessment, footwear advice, exercises and other appropriate care remain important.
When booking: explain where it hurts, how long it has hurt, any injury, your diagnosis and what makes symptoms better or worse. Ask whether your concern is within the clinic’s services or needs referral.
Start with a diagnosis and a review plan
Foot pain can have several causes. Ask what role rehabilitation, footwear changes or referral should play. Agree on how improvement will be measured and when to reconsider the plan if symptoms do not improve. Evidence for one condition or wavelength should not be treated as proof for every device or complaint.
Questions to ask before treatment
- What diagnosis explains my concern, and is laser appropriate?
- What are the alternatives, likely benefits and risks for me?
- How many visits might I need, what will each cost, and when will we review progress?
- What should I do before and after the appointment?
Share your medicines, allergies, pregnancy, diabetes, reduced feeling, circulation concerns and previous treatment reactions. Do not stop medicines or apply numbing cream unless your treating clinician directs you.
