A sore nail edge needs the right care.

An ingrown nail presses into or grows into the skin at the side of a toe. Pain, redness and swelling may occur. Drainage, spreading redness or increasing pain need prompt clinical advice.

A nail brace may be considered for a suitable curved nail after assessment. Bracing is not suitable for every nail and does not replace treatment of infection or another problem. Your nurse will explain alternatives, follow-up and whether referral is needed.

Avoid digging down the nail edges or cutting out the painful corner yourself. Tell us about diabetes, reduced sensation or circulation concerns when booking.

Help us plan your visit

Tell us where the problem is, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you have already tried. Bring your medication list and share allergies, diabetes, circulation concerns, reduced feeling, wounds and any previous diagnosis.

Nurses assess within their scope. New or unexplained pain, an injury or a concern requiring a medical diagnosis may need your GP, nurse practitioner or another appropriate clinician before treatment. Call us if you are unsure. Sudden severe symptoms, spreading redness, a new wound or a hot, swollen foot need prompt medical advice.
